LSHTM is currently seeking to appoint a Statistician at the level of Research Fellow or Assistant Professor within the Department of Infection Biology. This role primarily supports two newly funded projects under the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) framework, with additional responsibilities involving statistical analysis and epidemiological interpretation for various research initiatives. These projects are based in the dynamic laboratories of Professor Chris Drakeley and Dr. Julius Hafalla, focusing predominantly on immunoepidemiology.
Role Overview
The appointed Statistician will play a crucial role in managing and analyzing laboratory and epidemiological data generated across multiple studies and locations. This position requires working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure rigorous data curation, statistical modeling, and the interpretation of complex infectious disease datasets.
The role is fixed-term, spanning two years, with a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week (1.0 Full-Time Equivalent). It is funded primarily through two UKRI grants alongside a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The successful candidate will be based in London at LSHTM’s campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate, curate, and maintain laboratory and epidemiological datasets from various studies and geographic locations.
- Conduct advanced statistical analysis and epidemiological modeling to support ongoing research projects.
- Provide expert interpretation of statistical outputs and epidemiological findings to inform project objectives and publications.
- Contribute to grant applications, reports, and scientific papers by providing statistical expertise.
- Engage in knowledge sharing and training activities within the department
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will hold a postgraduate qualification, preferably a doctoral degree, in a relevant discipline such as biostatistics, epidemiology, or a closely related field. Expertise in infectious disease epidemiology, particularly malaria, is essential. Candidates should have a strong background in the application of multiple analytical metrics and experience in designing and implementing study protocols.
Proficiency in statistical software is required, with practical experience in Stata and programming skills in R strongly preferred. The role demands excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex statistical concepts effectively to interdisciplinary teams.
Salary and Benefits
The position offers a salary commensurate with experience, aligned to the LSHTM salary scale. It ranges from £45,097 to £51,156 per annum pro rata for Grade 6, and £52,581 to £55,891 per annum pro rata for Grade 7, inclusive of London Weighting.
The post is subject to the terms and conditions of service of LSHTM. Annual leave entitlement includes 30 working days per year, pro rata for part-time employees, in addition to discretionary wellbeing days. Pension scheme membership is available.
